Baritone horns, or simply called baritones, are musical instruments exclusively used in brass bands. The baritone belongs to the tuba family and is tuned with a tenor sound in the key of B flat. It is considered a mellow instrument, producing bright sounds as compared to trombones and euphoniums.
Confusion with euphoniums
Baritone horns are often confused with euphoniums. However, there is a distinction between the two.
There is a misconception that a baritone is three-valved while a euphonium is four-valved. However, the main difference between the two is the shape of its bore and the overall physical size of the instruments.
Although both produce partials of the B-flat harmonic series, and both have a nine-foot-long main bugle, the baritone horn has a smaller bore and a tighter wrap. Also, the baritone horn is closer in relation to the cornet which has nearly cylindrical bore, while the euphonium is closer in nature to the flugelhorn or tuba with their conical bores.
Kinds
The two kinds of baritone horn include the three-valve and four-valve baritone horn.
The three-valve baritone horn uses three front-action piston valves to produce a bright baritone sound. It comes with a fixed bell that can face forward or upward, and a medium-cup mouthpiece that does not require too much blowing effort.
Meanwhile, a four-valve baritone horn has an added valve that allows for a wider variety of low tones. It produces a deep, rich sound, an excellent tone, and an accurate intonation.
