Feed High Quality, Nutritious Dog and Cat Food - Guidelines for Analyzing Ingredients
Dog and cat food owners have become more educated in analyzing the ingredients in dog and cat food.
We all remember the pet food contamination and recalls that occurred because of toxic ingredients and additives in the food. This resulted in the death of many of our beloved pets.
Despite this scare, there are still very poor quality, chemical loaded foods out there. Foods lacking in good nutrition are generally found in local grocery stores.
Pet specialty stores can sometimes carry food that is higher quality. But, many times, that food is several months old before being purchased by the consumer. By that time, the nutritional value of the food has been depleted.
The pet food recalls have changed the way we select our pets' food. A high quality, nutritious dog and cat food is critical to our pet's health, longevity, and happiness.
I have found that the best high quality, nutritious dog and cat food is found online. Generally this food is delivered directly to your doorstep and is very fresh when it arrives.
Here are some guidelines to follow when reviewing a pet food label and analyzing the ingredients in dog and cat food:
- Be careful when a pet food label may say that the food is "premium", "high quality", or "top grade." It may say it is full of nutrients, anti-oxidants, and all the vitamins and minerals your pet needs. But it may be far from that.
- Ingredients printed on the label may be misleading. The label does not show the quality of the ingredients. For example, the food may include a meat product such as chicken, fish, liver, lamb, etc. But the meat product may be "unfit for human consumption." This happens many times in pet food. It may include gristle, bones, fat, and other parts of the meat that you and I would never consider eating. I'm sure you are like me. I would never consider feeding my little guy anything like that.
- Choose a product with high meat content. This will provide the pet a high quality protein. The first ingredient listed on the label should be a specific meat or a specific meat meal. This would include chicken, chicken meal, fish, fish meal, lamb, etc. Don't buy a product that contains a general meat such as "poultry." You have no idea what you are getting if a general meat is listed.
- A high quality grain is a good ingredient, but it shouldn't be the first item listed. Different types of the same ingredient should not be listed in the top 5. For example, it would not be good if brewers rice, brown rice, and rice flour are all listed in the top 5 ingredients since these are all the same ingredient.
- High quality grains should be used such as such as barley, brown rice, or oatmeal. A high quality, nutritional dog or cat food should not contain wheat or corn. These ingredients are highly susceptible to contamination, not easily digested, and can cause allergic reactions in pets.
- If a pet food contains by-products, do not buy it.
- Only natural preservatives should be used in the food. Chemical preservatives such as BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin should be avoided.
- There should be no fillers in the pet food.
- The food should contain no artificial colorings and dyes. These ingredients can cause cancer.
In general, a high quality, nutritious dog or cat food should be free of hormones, antibiotics, chemical preservatives and colorings, pesticides, or herbicides.
The food should be natural and holistic. Its ingredients should be easily digestible. The food should be prepared in a USDA certified facility.
The food should be baked slowly and at low heat. Otherwise, most of the nutrients and vitamins are destroyed in the cooking process.
The bottom line is that you should find a pet food company you can trust.
If possible, speak directly with the person responsible for formulating the pet food products. Make sure that the formulator's top priority is the well being of the pet – not the cost of the ingredients or the company's profitability.
