I've given up work to lead England to a rugby victory

A KEYNSHAM sportswoman has resigned from her job so she can concentrate on her role as captain of England in the Rugby World Cup next month.

Catherine Spencer, 31, who has played rugby since she was five, quit her post at Yate Leisure Centre in Kennedy Way last month a post she had held since March 2006.

Miss Spencer, who has 56 caps at number eight, has made the sacrifice as she seeks to lead her country to the world title for the first time since 1994.

Like nearly all female rugby players, she has never been paid to play the game and makes huge personal sacrifices for the love of the sport.

On August 20, she will lead her team out onto the pitch in Guildford as the best 12 sides in the world battle it out to be named world champions on September 5.

Catherine, who describes her game as a mix between Zinzan Brooke and Dean Richards, said: "I resigned from my job as I really just wanted to concentrate this summer on the World Cup. My work has been really supportive though. It is hard combining it all.

"My Bristol and England team-mate, Sophie Hemming, works all hours as a vet and then has to fit training in as well. I don't know how she does it.

Catherine added: "As soon as you run out onto the pitch with an England shirt on, it is all worth it. It's a complete honour and I wouldn't change it for the world."

However, England's hopes are high when in November, Catherine led her side to their first victory over the Black Ferns in eight years.

Having won the tournament in 1994 and being placed third in 1998, England have finished runner-up in the last three World Cups.

Catherine, who studied Philosophy and Sociology at Cardiff University and plays the French horn, said: "We are feeling very prepared – the training camps have been a massive deal for us in terms of confidence. There are various different camps in different locations  we even did an Army camp in the Brecon Beacons. We have just had an excellent strength and conditioning camp and feel really good.

"We put the pressure on ourselves to do as well as we can do. People expect us to do well and we actually thrive on that pressure. The Black Ferns are the current world champions and ranked first, but we beat them in November 2009 and so we know we can beat them."
