Rotary Encoders for Inactive Devices

Industrial digital encoders are useful in making sure a certain industrial application runs smoothly. They differ from binary encoders which translate angular information into binary code. Rotary encoders are used in applications that run rather slowly, such as flood gates, cranes, telescopes, valves, and other devices.

Absolute rotary encoders often have the following mechanical features:

• Shaft diameter: 3/8”
• Shaft loading;
• Shaft runout;
• Starting torque: at 25 degree Celsius;
• Bearings;
• Stainless steel shaft material;
• Bearing housing;
• Die cast aluminum cover;

They are also available with resolutions that go up to 13 bits and have parallel gray code output. Other than that, these shaft encoders also incorporate EMI shielding, thermal coefficients, and customized optics.

Aside from the mechanical features, the electrical features of the encoders include 5-28 voltage supply, and 4096 or 8192 counts per shaft turn. Environmental specifications include operating temperature of 0 to 7 degrees Celsius, 50 g’s shock, 5 to 2000 Hz vibration, and 98% RH humidity without condensation.

Compared to absolute encoders, metric encoders are incremental encoders which can either be mechanical or optical encoders which provide outstanding shock and vibration resistance. They work really well in uncomfortable environments such as wet or dirty ones, and are mostly used in industrial applications. The metric encoders come in 10mm and 6mm shafts, with stainless steel bearings, aluminum enclosure, 9,000 maximum RPM, and weighs approximately 10 ounces. Metric encoders provide great performance and flexibility, as well as very good resistance to shock and vibration. This and other increment encoders are good for metric tools and equipment used in many U.S. industries and worldwide.
